Webelos Adventure: Stronger, Faster, Higher
NOTE: Before we get started, I strongly suggest you printout and use the worksheets on this, get the parents and boys working together and have stations to do exercises and record the results.
Do all of these:
Understand and explain why you should warm up before exercising and cool down afterward. Demonstrate the proper way to warm up and cool down.
Do these activities and record your results: (Use the worksheet linked at the bottom)
20-yard dash
Vertical jump
Lifting a 5-pound weight
Push-ups
Curls
Jumping rope
- To make it go quickly, for #2 I'm going to time the boys in 10 second units, how many pushup in 10 sec, etc.. and do the 20 yard dash for time. We'll record it all the worksheet, for high jump i have a yardstick taped to the something vertical, then a stick to put against it and have them jump over it. eazy high jump.
Make an exercise plan that includes at least three physical activities. Carry out your plan for 30 days, and write down your progress each week(see worksheet below).
- I'm going to have the boys choose 3 of the activities above to practice and check their results at the next 2 meetings.
With your den, prepare a fitness course or series of games that includes jumping, avoiding obstacles, weight lifting, and running. Time yourself going through the course, and improve your time over a two-week period.
- Not a lot to do here, just set a simple course up in your meeting area, and do it over 2 weeks, till every improves their time. honestly I wouldn't stress the time aspect of the first one, just let them do it for fun, then have them do it again for speed... then two weeks later, run it again for speed, and try to share any tricks for going faster with all the boys... I think the key will be easy setup and tear down.
With adult guidance, lead younger Scouts in a fitness game or games as a gathering activity for a pack or den meeting.
- Any game where lots of running is involved counts as aerobic exercise, try Tag, Soccer or Ultimate Frisbee.
Try a new sport you have never tried before.
- For some scouts this can be tricky, the obvious ones, Football, soccer, volleyball, hockey, basketball and ultimate Frisbee are pretty common.. If no one of these are un-played by your boys, you will have to get more creative, here are a few ideas to get your juices flowing
- Frisbee Golf
- Horseshoes
- Corn Hole
- Badminton
- Track and Field (long jump , sprinting etc, easy to do at a den meeting)
- Martial arts,
- "Indian" wrestling
- Skiing /snowboarding
- Skateboarding (I worry about liability here)
- Golf (I think I would stretch this to mini golf... Sounds like a fun field trip)
